For the purposes of this debate an “adulthood-focused parent” focuses on academic and extracurricular achievements, structure, and discipline; aiming to set their child up for successful adulthood. In comparison, a “childhood-focused parent” aims to “let children be children” by focusing on play time and personal enjoyment.

Speculative fiction is a broad category of fiction that uses elements that are nonexistent in terms of reality, recorded history, or nature and the present universe, covering various themes in the context of the supernatural, futuristic, and many other imaginative topics. The worlds created through speculative fiction often contain extrapolations of current world issues. Some examples of speculative fiction are The Handmaid's Tale, Us, The Hunger Games.

For the sake of this debate, Karbieland is an alternate reality where the basic physical/material needs of everyone is unfailingly met, however, society is strictly divided into two strict gender roles, those of the women (Karbies) and those of the men (Bens). Bens are seen as second-class citizens, while Karbies are first-class: they occupy all the important jobs, decide all decisions, and are seen as more valuable than Bens. Furthermore, it is highly unlikely that this strict social order will ever change.
