In July 2023, the B.C. government announced a plan to ban single use plastics offered by businesses by December 2023. Shopping bags, disposable food service accessories, and food service packaging made from hard-to-recycle plastics will be banned. Certain sectors such as healthcare will be exempted from the restriction. Plastic items for personal use (such as trash bags from grocery stores) will not be banned. Businesses must provide eco-friendly alternatives to consumers, and they are allowed to charge an extra fee for the alternative.
